Quality of research on temporal changes in opioid use.

Claim and prescription data for Montana Workers' Compensation Corporation claims open from 2011 and 2012 were analyzed by claim age and type of opioid.

Studies show a significant cumulative daily increase in morphine milligrams prescribed to patients with acute pain , and chronic pain management clients. The higher cost per morphine milligram prescribed for long- and short-acting pain medications, but the patient claims where long-acting opioids were prescribed (with or without short-acting opioids) versus only short-acting medications.

CONCLUSIONS:

The daily dose and cost of opioids pain medication per claim increased over the research period related to an increase in prescriptions for long-acting opioids.
