Causes and Results of Inadequate Acute Pain Management.

Intense acute pain affects millions of people each year. Despite the current focus on the importance of chronic pain control, management of acute pain syndrome has remained substantial. The main objective of this case study was to identify the barriers to effective treatment of acute pain and the potential results of inadequate pain management. A comprehensive book review was conducted to search articles relevant to the pain management. Information regarding causes of inadequate pain management, along with undermanaged pain was pulled out and summarized. Patient Studies indicate that treatment of acute pain syndrome remains superior due to attitudes and educational barriers on the part of doctors and patients, along with limits of available narcotic drug therapies. Inadequate pain management of acute distress negatively impacts huge aspects of patient care and health, and increased the risk of developing chronic pain. Although narcotic drugs are the preferred treatment for most moderate to severe acute pain, their side effects can hamper their use, and clinical effectiveness. Analgesic pain medication regimens with an improved efficacy/tolerability balance have the subsatantial hope to improve acute pain management, and thus reduce the incidence and occurence of chronic pain. Multiple studies examining the use of multiple narcotic drugs analgesics with different mechanisms of action suggest that multi modalities of drug therapies may offer an improved efficacy/tolerability balance over single agent regimens. Conclusions. Pain patients need a significant well-tolerated narcotic drug analgesic therapies to limit the negative results of undermanaged acute pain. The use of multimodal therapy has demonstrated increasing promise and is supported by current practice guidelines. Pain Clinic Home
